Kibuye, located in Karongi on the shores of Lake Kivu, holds a deep connection to its name, which means "stone" in Kinyarwanda.
This powerful meaning has inspired the design and architecture of Umurobyi Lodge, where natural stones play a central role. In one of our Standard Rooms, Mukondo, you can still see one of the original rocks from the property’s foundation, and the garden showcases a stunning "rainfall" of stones preserved from the land. Kibuye lies in a volcanic region, its name reflecting the area’s geological history shaped by ancient eruptions. The water of Lake Kivu is sweet rainwater that filled the volcanic basin over time.
Our Unique Location
at Kibuye
Lake Kivu is also known for its rich reserves of methane gas, which significantly impact the region's fauna and flora. This unique environment supports only specific fish species, including tilapia and sambazas, which are staples in the local diet.
On a clear day, the breathtaking view from Kibuye includes three majestic volcanoes: Nyiragongo, an active volcano, Karisimbi, and Mikeno. These stunning peaks can be admired directly from the penthouse at Umurobyi Lodge. The volcanic legacy of the area extends beyond the scenery—at Umurobyi Lodge, volcanic stones are sometimes used in the kitchen, adding a unique and earthy touch to the culinary experience.
