About Us

Umurobyi means “fisherman” or “fisherwoman” in Kinyarwanda. Nestled in the heart of Kibuye's vibrant fishing area and just steps from the traditional port for fishing boats, the name reflects the atmosphere and energy we aim to share with our guests during their stay.

Umurobyi Fisherwoman

At Umurobyi Lodge, our name and identity are deeply rooted in the rich heritage of Kibuye's fishing culture. Drawing inspiration from the hardworking fisherwomen who play a pivotal role in the local fishing industry, we’ve brought this story to life through an exquisite bronze statue crafted by renowned Belgian artist Dirk De Keyzer.

This remarkable statue, proudly displayed on the shores of our lodge, serves as the centerpiece of our story. It embodies not only the essence of our name but also the spirit of gender equality—a value we hold dear. Choosing a fisherwoman as the focal point of this art honors the vital role women play in commercializing the fishing trade here in Kibuye, breaking stereotypes and empowering communities.

The design of our lodge’s logo reflects this statue, seamlessly tying together our name, our story, and the vibrant culture of the region. Come and experience the beauty and meaning behind this masterpiece, and let it connect you to the heart of Lake Kivu’s inspiring traditions.

Architecture & Design

Our lodge features simple yet elegant concrete bungalows and rooms with a modern square design. The well-finished accommodations let in plenty of natural light, featuring large glass-fenced balconies and wide lake-view windows that provide stunning views of Lake Kivu, even from the comfort of your bed. The wooden parquet floors, high-end bathroom fixtures, and small artistic touches by local painters give the spaces a refined, hedonistic atmosphere—Cape Town style on the shores of Lake Kivu.

Our mission is to combine this unique design with a warm and personal touch. As a family-managed lodge, welcoming guests is at the heart of what we do, making them feel like part of our family throughout their stay.

The islands around Umurobyi Lodge

Umurobyi Lodge boasts a stunning 270° view of Lake Kivu, encompassing nine islands, including Napoleon, Amahora, and Kumbabara, which lies directly in front of the lodge. Every accommodation at the lodge offers breathtaking views of the lake, allowing guests to fully immerse themselves in the serene beauty of their surroundings. Kumbabara Island carries a rich history from when it was inhabited. Life on the island was challenging; children swam across the lake to attend school, and families relied on pirogues to access the mainland.

Today, the island is no longer inhabited, as the government prohibits permanent residency. However, local farmers continue to cultivate the land and must wait for passing pirogues to cross the lake and harvest their crops.

The lodge owner has preserved a 10-meter-wide public access path on the property, allowing farmers to reach the water conveniently.

Visitors can hike on Kumbabara Island to explore its unique agricultural practices and experience how locals live in harmony with nature. You can safely leave a kayak on the island’s shore without concern—your belongings will remain untouched.
