Visit the Islands
Explore the stunning shores and islands of Lake Kivu on a guided boat trip to one of the beautiful islands, such as Napoleon or Amahoro Island.
Napoleon Island is known for its distinctive shape, resembling Napoleon Bonaparte's hat, and is home to a large colony of fruit bats, making it a fascinating destination for wildlife enthusiasts.
Amahoro Island, also called "Peace Island," is celebrated for its tranquility and calm atmosphere. The island also holds historical significance, as you can find the ruins of houses from when people once lived there. While the government has since prohibited habitation, these ruins remain a glimpse into the island's past.
On both islands and along the journey, you'll have opportunities to spot birds, monkeys, and other remarkable fauna along the lake's picturesque environment.

Kayaking
Included in your stay, you can enjoy complimentary use of one of our kayaks to explore the tranquil waters of Lake Kivu and its beautiful islands. If you're interested in learning more about the unique fauna and flora of the area, we can also provide a guided tour of one of the islands for a more immersive experience.
It’s just a one-hour kayak trip to Kumbabara Island, where you can explore local agriculture, take a scenic hike, or even organize a picnic amidst the peaceful surroundings. For the more adventurous, Napoleon Island is a 3-4 hour kayak journey, offering stunning views and the chance to experience one of the lake’s most iconic locations.

Vespa Drive
Stay for two nights at Umurobyi Lodge and enjoy a complimentary 3-hour Vespa experience to explore Kibuye and the scenic Karongi district. Immerse yourself in the local culture by visiting nearby communities, appreciating the stunning natural surroundings, or riding to a tea plantation in the area. You can also visit landmarks such as Bisesero, the Source of the Nile, or a local clay manufacturing site. Please note that a valid driver’s license is required to participate.

You can hike to a nearby local community or even explore part of the famous Congo Nile Trail, enjoying the stunning shoreline of Lake Kivu along the way.

Birdwatching & Stargazing
The region is home to diverse bird species, making it an excellent spot for birdwatching enthusiasts. From Umurobyi Lodge, you can observe a variety of birds, including the African Sea Eagle, Kites, Sparrows, Cuckoo Hawks, Mountain Buzzards, Kingfishers, Bee-eaters, Blue-headed and Red-throated birds, and Cormorants. Beyond birds, you may even spot playful otters in the area! For those interested, the lodge provides binoculars to enhance your wildlife viewing experience.
Thanks to our unique location, Umurobyi Lodge is completely free from light pollution, making it an ideal destination for stargazing. On clear nights, you can marvel at a stunning array of stars visible from this part of the world.

In Kibuye, you have the unique opportunity to take a boat trip across Lake Kivu to Idjwi Island, located in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Known as the second-largest inland island in Africa, Idjwi Island offers a fascinating glimpse into the traditional way of life of its residents.
